Enable Gmail’s SMTP settings

To enable Gmail’s SMTP settings, you must first generate an App Password by enabling two-step verification on your Google account and then creating a new app password. You will then use this app password, along with the Gmail SMTP server address smtp.gmail.com and port 587 (for TLS) or 465 (for SSL), in your email client or application’s settings.

Step 1: Enable 2-Step Verification and generate an App Password

  • Go to your Google Account’s security page by clicking your profile icon and selecting “Manage your Google Account”.
  • Navigate to “Security” and find “2-Step Verification” to turn it on if it’s not already enabled.
  • After enabling it, scroll down to “App passwords” and click “Create”.
  • Select “Mail” and “Other (Custom name)” from the dropdown menus, and type a name for the application (e.g., “SMTP”).
  • Click “Create” to generate the 16-character app password. Copy this password, as you will need it to set up the SMTP settings.

Step 2: Enter the Gmail SMTP settings in your application

  • Open the settings for the application or email client you are using.
  • Find the “Outgoing Server” or “SMTP” settings.
  • Enter the following details:
  • SMTP Server: smtp.gmail.com
  • Username: Your full Gmail address (e.g., yourname@gmail.com)
  • Password: The 16-character app password you just generated
  • Port: 587 (for TLS) or 465 (for SSL)
  • Security: TLS or SSL, depending on the port you chose
  • Authentication: Make sure it is set to “Yes” or “On”
